HOW TO SET AN EQ AND TUNE YOUR CAR STEREO

Always trust your ears when installing a car stereo and new speakers.

The time you spend setting up your stereo is worth the quality of sound you want to enjoy.

Keep these tips in mind as you set up your car stereo in Ottawa to get the best possible performance and sound from your system.

Why is it important to tune the stereo?

The stereo setting improves the sound. The difference between good sound quality and great sound.

Since you’ve already put a lot of time and effort into updating your car stereo, you can also take advantage of the new stereo system and adapt it to its capacity.

How do equalizers work?

When set correctly, the stereo equalizer (EQ) will get the best sound from your car stereo.

Balanced system sound reproduction improves the sound reproduction of stereos by eliminating spikes and large dips between frequencies that cause dull and unpleasant noises.

Basic EQs only have 3 groups to work with, while more complex EQs can have 13 more complex EQs.

The equalizer represents 3 bands, for example, for frequency distribution for high lights, mediums and lows. The low frequencies are typically between 60 and 120 Hz, between 400 and 2,500 Hz and the triple frequencies between 8,000 and 15,000 Hz.

Multiband EQs allow for better allocation of frequency bands (i.e. 13 instead of 3). This gives you more control over the stereo sound.

How can I set up my equalizer?

To set up the equalizer, you will need a real-time analyzer (RTA) to measure the car stereo sound. You can easily download the RTA app on your smartphone. You will also need the pink noise generator which incorporates many RTA applications into your software.

Pink noise is the same output over a wide range of frequencies, typically 20 Hertz to 20,000 Hertz. View pink noise on your car stereo using the RTA app which shows a frequency graph. Since you are analyzing pink noise, there should be no significant differences between frequencies other than the soft curve.

The main difference is 3 dB, with frequencies of 32 Hz at the top of the curve, typically between 120-4000 Hz and 8000-16000 Hz.

Check your equalizer for the correct frequencies and make some adjustments. If you have a multi-bar EQ, some tweaking and tweaking may be required before you can read your RTA chart without a problem.

3-band EQs can be more complex as each driver can handle a wider range of frequencies. It’s a good starting point for adapting to external factors (subwoofer placement, gain, crossover, or basalt on an aftermarket amplifier), but you’ll likely need to make adjustments.

If you still have gaps, select the button closest to the frequency you want to adjust (Low, Mid, Treble / Treble) and reduce the bandwidth. The main unit main menu should also allow you to select the centre frequency. This is the frequency your tuning range is aimed at.

Try adjusting the EQ to balance things out a bit. The 3-band EQs are heavier, but with a little patience, you can fine-tune the high frequencies and fine-tune the sound.

A step by step guide to stereo tuning

If your stereo has high-tech features such as digital audio processing, auto balance, and timing, consult the stereo’s instruction manual.

When you are ready to install the car stereo, sit in the driver’s seat and follow these steps:

Step 1: Turn on the stereo

When setting up the stereo, make sure the car is parked. It’s definitely not the job you have to do while driving. Take a minute to adjust your stereo sound. It’s a pleasant experience, so you don’t need to run it.

Step 2: Play your favourite story

Play one of your favourite songs on the stereo, something you know inside.

It should also be a song that you will no longer listen to as you will need a good reference point to tune your stereo.

Step 3: Configure the timing controls

Adjust the stereo driver until the music comes only from the previous speakers. Then adjust the left balance until you enjoy a comfortable sound.

Write down these agreements with a piece of paper or a telephone.

Now do the exact opposite with the mute button so that the sound comes only from the rear speakers. Adjust the balance from left to right until you are satisfied with the sound and pay attention to this adjustment.

If the front and rear speaker balance settings are the same, great. You can leave them as they are. Otherwise, you will have to compromise between two different options. Get the right balance of high-quality audio from the front and rear speakers.

Fully adjust the thread guide. Then slowly increase the volume using the Mute button until the music has reached a satisfying depth but still appears to be right in front of you.

For base units that allow you to adjust the audio difference between the front and rear speakers, set the rear speakers slightly lower than the front speakers. This makes the music appear to be coming from the front speakers, even when the volume is turned up.

Step 4: Set the tone

Sit back and listen to the music for a while. Are all the notes available: high, medium and low? Are the tones balanced?

Be aware of what’s wrong with the base before making changes.

For stereo systems with equalizer settings like Sound Equalizer or Equalizer and Bass Boost, try the presets to see if they improve the music. Adjust the sound to your needs with bass, treble, mid and other EQ settings.

Try different EQ settings, cuts, lows and highs until your music sounds good.

The highs need to be clear but not boring. The core should be clear and smooth. And the bass should be full, but not loud.

Speaker setup and noise cancellation

Some speaker modifications can help improve the sound of the entire stereo system.

Just like setting up a stereo, turn on one of your favourite songs and start making arrangements.

Adjust the tweeter

Use brackets or wavelengths to adjust the high frequencies of the soundtrack so that they have a direct path to the driver’s ears.

To get the best sound, try directing the sound in different directions. Make sure you adjust the tweeter level settings of your components until you get the perfect sound.

Personalize the filling

While your front speakers should provide the best mids and highlights, your rear speakers should pay no attention. The rear speakers should add depth to the sound of the front speakers.

Subwoofer only

If your stereo sound or amplifier has a built-in cross filter, set the treble filters on the front speakers as often as the speakers can handle. Then raise the crossbar until you can clearly hear the chopsticks, but they still seem to come in front of you.

Noise reduction

Noise-reducing materials such as dynamics can improve the overall sound of your stereo.
